Stockholm: a moment of immense pride for Saudi Arabia and the entire Arab world, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced on Wednesday that Professor Omar bin Younis Yaghi, a Saudi scientist, has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He shares the honor with Professor Susumu Kitagawa from Japan and Professor Richard Robson from Australia. The trio has been recognized for their pioneering work in the development of Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs) a revolutionary class of compounds that combine metals with organic molecules to create ultra-porous, lattice-like structures capable of capturing, filtering, and storing gases and liquids with extraordinary efficiency.
Professor Yaghi’s research represents a paradigm shift in modern chemistry. His innovations in reticular chemistry have led to the creation of advanced materials that can extract water from air, purify contaminated water, absorb carbon dioxide, and store hydrogen for clean energy use. These achievements have transformed the fields of sustainable energy, environmental protection, and nanotechnology, offering practical solutions to some of the most pressing global challenges, including climate change and water scarcity.
Often referred to as the founder of reticular chemistry, Professor Yaghi has made outstanding contributions to material sciences. Over his career, he has published more than 300 scientific papers, which have collectively received over 250,000 citations, ranking him among the most influential chemists in the world. Beyond academic research, he has also established several international scientific companies and led groundbreaking projects in energy storage, carbon capture, and advanced materials development.
Before receiving the Nobel Prize, Professor Yaghi had already earned some of the world’s most prestigious scientific honors. His accolades include the King Faisal International Prize for Science, Albert Einstein World Award of Science, Wolf Prize in Chemistry, Eni Award for Energy Innovation, Gregory Aminoff Prize from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Finn Future Award for Emerging Technologies, Ernest Solvay Prize, and the Arab Laureates Award (Nawabegh al-Arab). These awards collectively highlight his extraordinary impact on global science and innovation.
Following the Nobel announcement, Dr. Munir bin Mahmoud Al-Desouki, President of the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST), expressed deep pride in Professor Yaghi’s achievement.

Professor Yaghi was granted Saudi citizenship in recognition of his exceptional scientific contributions and alignment with the goals of Vision 2030, which seeks to empower national talent and attract global innovators.
