Nicolas Sarkozy Begins Prison Sentence Over Libyan Campaign Funding Scandal

Libya Cash Scandal Ends in Jail Term for Sarkozy, a Historic Blow to French Politics

Paris: In a historic and dramatic turn of events, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrived at La Santé Prison in Paris on Tuesday to begin a five-year prison sentence for conspiring to illegally raise campaign funds from Libya. The moment marks the most stunning downfall for a French leader in modern history and the first time a former president has been jailed since Marshal Philippe Pétain after World War II.

Sarkozy, who governed France from 2007 to 2012, left his home hand in hand with his wife, Carla Bruni, as a crowd of loyal supporters chanted “Nicolas, Nicolas!” and sang the French national anthem, La Marseillaise. The emotional farewell was both defiant and symbolic a former head of state stepping into history under the shadow of conviction.

Shortly before entering the prison, Sarkozy published a lengthy statement on X (formerly Twitter), describing himself as a victim of political vengeance. It is not a former president being imprisoned this morning, he wrote. It is an innocent man.

The conviction, handed down last month, concluded years of investigations and legal battles over claims that Sarkozy’s 2007 presidential campaign received millions in cash from Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, who was later overthrown and killed during the Arab Spring uprisings.

While the court found Sarkozy guilty of conspiring with close aides to arrange the illicit funding, it acquitted him of directly handling or personally using the Libyan money. Nevertheless, the ruling sent shockwaves across France’s political spectrum a stark reminder that even the nation’s most powerful figures are not above the law.

Sarkozy, 70, has consistently denied wrongdoing, calling the charges politically motivated. His family has stood firmly by him, with his brother Guillaume Sarkozy telling BFM TV. I am proud of him. Proud that he goes to prison with his head held high. And absolutely convinced of his innocence.

As Sarkozy begins his sentence, the case continues to polarize France symbolizing both the strength and the scrutiny of its justice system.
