The Swiss city of Geneva has once again become the focal point of global parliamentary dialogue, as the 151st General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) officially commenced its sessions. Delegations from across the world arrived to participate in one of the largest gatherings of legislators, bringing together speakers, members of parliaments, and international representatives under one roof. Among the most prominent participants this year is the delegation from the *Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, headed by **Sheikh Dr. Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Al-Sheikh, the *Speaker of the Shura Council.

His participation reflects Riyadh’s growing role in promoting dialogue, diplomacy, and international cooperation through parliamentary engagement.

The assembly’s proceedings this year revolve around a particularly pressing global issue — “Upholding Humanitarian Standards and Supporting Humanitarian Action in Times of Crisis.” This theme comes at a time when the world continues to face complex humanitarian challenges, ranging from armed conflicts to natural disasters, displacement crises, and the growing effects of climate change.

The IPU’s leadership emphasized that the gathering aims not only to foster dialogue but also to translate words into coordinated action that strengthens humanitarian principles and supports those affected by crises across continents.

Throughout the first day of the assembly, hundreds of parliamentarians and senior officials from international organizations attended panel discussions, plenary debates, and thematic forums. The IPU’s four standing committees also convened to deliberate on their specialized agendas. Each committee — including the *Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs, the **Standing Committee on Peace and International Security, the **Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, and the *Standing Committee on Sustainable Development — addressed a variety of interconnected issues shaping today’s political and humanitarian landscape.

Discussions ranged from the protection of civilians in conflict zones to the strengthening of international cooperation on sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Amid these intense deliberations, the Saudi delegation actively contributed to various sessions, reflecting the Kingdom’s ongoing efforts to engage constructively in international parliamentary work. Dr. Al Al-Sheikh held a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the General Assembly, where he exchanged views with several parliamentary leaders from the Arab and Muslim world. Among them were *Faisal Al-Fayez, the **President of the Jordanian Senate; **Mohamed Ould Errachid, the **President of the Moroccan House of Councillors; and **Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the *Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan. These meetings centered on ways to enhance parliamentary cooperation, strengthen inter-Arab coordination, and unify positions on international issues of shared concern.

The meetings provided an opportunity for Saudi Arabia’s Shura Council to emphasize the importance of collective Arab representation within the IPU, particularly at a time when regional challenges demand greater collaboration and dialogue. Dr. Al Al-Sheikh reaffirmed the Kingdom’s consistent support for all initiatives that promote *peace, stability, and humanitarian solidarity. He also highlighted Saudi Arabia’s contributions to humanitarian efforts globally, particularly through its international aid programs and the *King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief), which continues to assist nations suffering from conflict and natural disasters.

In addition to Dr. Al Al-Sheikh’s engagements, the *Secretary-General of the Saudi Shura Council, Mohammed bin Dakhil Al-Mutairi, played an active role by representing the Kingdom in the *meeting of the Association of Secretaries-General of Arab Parliaments.

His participation underscored the importance Saudi Arabia places on strengthening the administrative and technical frameworks of Arab parliamentary institutions. Through his involvement, Al-Mutairi contributed to discussions on enhancing cooperation among Arab legislative bodies and developing shared strategies to improve the effectiveness of parliamentary governance.

Several members of the Saudi Shura Council were also present in the meetings of the four standing committees of the IPU. Their participation covered a broad spectrum of discussions ranging from international security and counterterrorism efforts to *human rights advocacy, **democratic governance, and **climate resilience policies. The Saudi representatives actively exchanged perspectives with their counterparts from other countries, presenting the Kingdom’s evolving vision for global engagement, which aligns with the objectives of *Saudi Vision 2030 — a roadmap that emphasizes global partnerships, sustainable development, and international cooperation.

On the sidelines of the IPU’s main events, Dr. Al Al-Sheikh chaired the coordination meeting of the Arab Group at the level of parliament speakers. This high-level session brought together leaders from various Arab parliaments to discuss a unified stance on key resolutions being debated within the IPU.

The meeting also sought to harmonize regional efforts in defending Arab causes, enhancing diplomatic communication, and promoting shared humanitarian goals. It was an essential step toward ensuring that Arab voices are represented strongly and cohesively in global parliamentary forums.

Delegates at the assembly praised the IPU for creating a platform that not only brings together political representatives from around the world but also allows them to collaborate on practical solutions to urgent challenges.

For Saudi Arabia, such events serve as a continuation of its diplomatic engagement on the multilateral stage — one that prioritizes dialogue, mutual respect, and cooperation to achieve common humanitarian objectives.

As the sessions progress, the assembly is expected to adopt resolutions that will guide global parliamentary contributions to humanitarian work. These resolutions will aim to enhance coordination between national parliaments and international organizations, particularly in providing assistance to vulnerable populations. The IPU’s 151st session, therefore, stands not only as a forum for discussion but as a step toward concrete policy alignment among the world’s legislative bodies.

The participation of the Saudi Shura Council delegation symbolizes the Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening its parliamentary diplomacy, deepening its cooperation with both Arab and international partners, and reinforcing the humanitarian values that lie at the heart of global governance. Through leadership roles, active participation in committee work, and meaningful bilateral engagements, Saudi Arabia continues to play a constructive part in shaping the global parliamentary agenda — an agenda built upon dialogue, empathy, and shared responsibility for the well-being of humanity.
