Trump Claims Credit for Defusing India-Pakistan Tensions After Talks with Modi

U.S. President Donald Trump recently revealed that he had a detailed conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which the two leaders discussed not only trade but also regional peace and stability in South Asia. According to Trump, he urged Modi to avoid any possible conflict with Pakistan, emphasizing that war between the two nuclear-armed neighbors would be disastrous not just for them but for the entire region.

Speaking at a colorful Diwali event held in the Oval Office, attended by a large number of Indian-origin Americans, Trump said with a smile, “I spoke with your Prime Minister today. It was a very good conversation. We discussed trade, regional issues, and mutual relations. I told him that avoiding war with Pakistan would be in everyone’s interest, and I’m glad to say both nations have stepped back from conflict — which is truly a positive step forward.”

This statement came shortly after weeks of heightened tension between India and Pakistan, during which both sides exchanged drone strikes, missile attacks, and heavy artillery fire along the border. These clashes claimed several lives and created fear in the border regions.

However, on May 10, both countries reached an agreement to cease all land, air, and sea military operations. This ceasefire was seen as a significant diplomatic breakthrough for peace in South Asia. In Washington, it is widely believed that President Trump played a behind-the-scenes role in facilitating this understanding through separate discussions with both sides.

During his remarks, Trump credited himself for helping to de-escalate the situation, saying that his mediation prevented a major conflict. New Delhi, however, dismissed any notion of third-party involvement, reiterating that all issues between India and Pakistan are handled bilaterally without external mediation.

Just a week earlier, at a White House dinner, Trump had shared another story — that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met him recently and, in an emotional tone, praised his role in preventing potential wars. Trump quoted him as saying, “You stopped many wars that could have cost millions of lives, and for that, we are thankful.”

Trump also highlighted that his recent talk with Modi touched upon India’s oil trade with Russia — a growing source of tension between Washington and New Delhi. According to Trump, “Prime Minister Modi assured me that India would not buy excessive amounts of oil from Russia, which had become a point of disagreement between us.”

The United States had imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods in response to India’s continued import of Russian oil, bringing total import duties up to nearly 50% this year. These tariffs have strained bilateral trade relations, though negotiations between the two sides are ongoing in hopes of reaching a balanced resolution.

Political analysts say Trump’s statements carry both diplomatic and domestic political significance. If Washington indeed played a key role in preventing another India-Pakistan confrontation, it would not only mark a foreign policy win for Trump’s administration but also strengthen America’s global image as a peace facilitator.
