Manama:The Third Asian Youth Games (AYG) began with a spectacular opening ceremony on Wednesday evening at Exhibition World Bahrain in Sakhir, marking a historic celebration of youth, sportsmanship, and unity across the Asian continent. More than 4,000 athletes from 45 Asian countries and regions are taking part in this mega sporting event, which runs from October 22 to 31, 2025.
This edition of the Games is the largest in AYG history, featuring 26 sports and 232 medal events, surpassing the previous two editions held in Nanjing (2013) and Singapore (2009). A total of 4,074 athletes, including 2,425 men and 1,649 women, are competing for glory making Bahrain 2025 a record-breaking milestone for Asian youth sports.
The grand opening was declared by Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of the King of Bahrain and Chairman of the General Authority for Sports. In his address, he highlighted Bahrain’s growing role as a hub for international sports, emphasizing the country’s commitment to empowering youth through athletic development.
Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy Chairman of the Bahrain Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, said the event underscores the role of sports as “a bridge of friendship among nations and a source of pride for Asia’s young generation. He described the Asian Youth Games as a platform for discovering future Olympic and Asian champions who will carry the continent’s flag on the global stage.
He further noted that organizing such a large-scale event in record time reflects Bahrain’s organizational excellence and its dedication to promoting regional cooperation through sports.
Timothy Fok, First Vice President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), praised Bahrain’s exceptional efforts in reviving the Games within just eight months of preparation after a decade-long gap. This is the largest youth games ever held a symbol of Asia’s unity, energy, and spirit, Fok said. The 14 to 17 age group is where legends are born. Bahrain 2025 will be remembered as the starting point for many future Asian and Olympic champions.
Among the participating delegations, Team China stands out with a massive 435-member contingent, including 293 athletes (148 women and 145 men) competing in 20 sports and 191 events, such as athletics, swimming, 3×3 basketball, and boxing. Taekwondo athlete Wang Wenjun and handball player Zhu Yifan proudly carried China’s flag during the opening parade.
The vibrant opening ceremony featured a breathtaking mix of cultural performances, music, and dazzling light displays that showcased Bahrain’s rich heritage and modern spirit. The torch relay, symbolizing peace and unity, culminated with the lighting of the Games cauldron amid roaring applause from thousands of spectators.
