KOHAT: A major breakthrough in Pakistan’s energy sector has been reported with the discovery of new oil and gas reserves in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, offering fresh prospects for domestic energy production and self-sufficiency. The Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) announced that the reserves were identified at the Bargazai X-1 well in the Nashpa Block, promising a significant boost to both oil and natural gas output.

Preliminary estimates indicate that the well is expected to yield 4,100 barrels of crude oil per day and 10.5 million standard cubic feet of natural gas daily, enhancing the province’s energy supply and contributing meaningfully to Pakistan’s overall energy security. The discovery was made after a 5,170-meter deep drilling operation, reflecting advanced technology and the expertise of skilled professionals.

The project is a joint venture involving OGDCL, Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), and Government Holdings Private Limited, highlighting a strong collaboration between public and private stakeholders. Analysts say the discovery not only strengthens the country’s energy production but is also poised to stimulate local economic growth, create employment opportunities, and support industrial development.

According to OGDCL, the successful completion of the project will increase the availability of oil and gas nationwide, reinforce energy infrastructure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and mark a significant step towards Pakistan’s goal of energy self-reliance. The discovery is expected to open new avenues for investment in the province’s energy sector, attract further exploration initiatives, and enhance Pakistan’s position in global energy markets.

Energy experts believe this development represents a strategic milestone for the country, with the potential to strengthen domestic energy supplies, reduce reliance on imports, and contribute to sustainable economic growth in the coming years.
