Manama:In a landmark move to promote environmental sustainability, the University of Bahrain inaugurated a tree-planting initiative aimed at expanding green spaces across the Kingdom. The program aligns with national efforts to combat climate change and encourage community engagement in environmental protection.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, Secretary General of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD); Dr. Fuad Mohammed Al Ansari, President of the University of Bahrain; Azzam Moutragi, CEO of Trafco Group; representatives from Saudi Arabia’s Net Zero company; and several other officials.
As part of the initiative, 50 Millingtonia hortensis trees were planted on the university campus with support from Trafco Group, exemplifying successful public-private cooperation. Students, faculty, and administrative staff actively participated, highlighting the importance of green initiatives in reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change effects.
Shaikha Maram bint Isa stressed that the campaign reflects Bahrain’s dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through community-focused environmental projects. She emphasized that the initiative forms part of a broader national vision prioritizing environmental sustainability while fostering youth engagement.
Dr. Al Ansari praised the program, noting that it complements the university’s ongoing efforts to strengthen environmental awareness among students and encourage active participation in sustainability and community development initiatives.
Azzam Moutragi highlighted Trafco Group’s commitment to social responsibility and its role in supporting national environmental projects. He remarked that collaboration between educational institutions and government entities offers an effective model for advancing green development in Bahrain.
The initiative aligns with Bahrain Vision 2030, which seeks to balance economic growth with environmental preservation and position sustainability as a strategic national priority. Officials and participants hope the program will inspire further afforestation efforts across the country.
