PSL Expansion Complete: Hyderabad and Sialkot Added After High-Value Auction

Pakistan’s premier T20 tournament is entering a new phase as the Pakistan Super League prepares to broaden its footprint in a historic way. After years of operating with a limited number of franchises, the league has now officially moved towards a larger, more inclusive structure that reflects its growing commercial strength and popularity among cricket fans.

Ahead of the upcoming season, the Pakistan Cricket Board completed a long-anticipated expansion auction that resulted in the addition of two brand-new franchises. As a result, the PSL will now feature eight teams instead of six, marking only the second time in its history that the competition has expanded. The two new teams will represent Hyderabad and Sialkot, cities that were approved earlier by the PCB as potential home venues for future franchises.

The auction process itself generated significant interest within Pakistan’s corporate and sports circles. A total of nine bidders, all of whom met the qualification criteria set by the cricket board, took part in the competitive bidding. From the very first round, the auction turned intense, with participants submitting aggressive offers that underlined the commercial value of owning a PSL team.

In the opening round of bidding, the FKS Group, owned by businessman Fawad Sarwar, emerged as a major contender. By placing a bid worth Rs1.75 billion, the group successfully secured ownership of the first franchise that was put up for sale. This bid exceeded the base valuation and demonstrated the strong confidence investors currently have in the league’s future growth. With this acquisition, the FKS Group officially became the owner of one of the two newly introduced PSL teams.

The second round of the auction proved just as competitive. The base price for the remaining franchise had been fixed at Rs1.70 billion, but once again, the bidding went beyond expectations. OZ Developers, led by Hamza Majeed, entered the fray with determination and ultimately won the rights to the eighth team by offering Rs1.85 billion. After securing ownership, the franchise was officially named after Sialkot, a city widely known for its deep connection to Pakistan’s sporting heritage, particularly cricket equipment manufacturing.

With these developments, Hyderabad and Sialkot were formally confirmed as the league’s seventh and eighth franchises. This expansion is being seen as a major milestone, as it opens the door for broader regional representation and creates new opportunities for local talent, sponsors, and fans.

The PSL’s journey toward expansion has been gradual but strategic. When the league was first launched, it featured only five teams. The first expansion took place during the third season, when Multan Sultans were added, increasing the total number of franchises to six. That move was initially met with cautious optimism, but over time it proved successful, both financially and competitively. Encouraged by that experience, the PCB began exploring the possibility of further expansion, especially as the league’s brand value continued to rise.

Now, with the upcoming 11th edition, the PSL is taking its biggest step yet by adding two teams at once. This latest expansion will see the number of franchises jump from six to eight, significantly altering the tournament’s structure and scheduling. Fans can expect a longer season, more matches, and a wider pool of players participating in the competition.

The 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League is scheduled to run from March 26 to May 3. Organisers have promised another high-energy season, featuring top local players alongside international stars. With the inclusion of new teams, the competition is expected to become even more intense, as franchises battle not only for the trophy but also for fan loyalty in newly represented regions.

Before the auction process began, the PCB had outlined clear guidelines for potential franchise owners. Successful bidders were allowed to choose a home city from a pre-approved list, which included Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Hyderabad, Sialkot, Muzaffarabad, and Gilgit. This approach was designed to ensure balanced geographic representation and to promote cricket in areas that have not traditionally hosted PSL teams.

The expansion plans were also influenced by the PCB’s broader review of the league following its landmark 10th season. After that edition concluded, the board conducted a comprehensive valuation of the existing six franchises. Based on this assessment, contract renewal offers were extended to all current team owners. Five of the six franchises agreed to continue under the revised terms, reaffirming their commitment to the league.

One notable exception was Multan Sultans. Unlike the other teams, Multan’s ownership did not finalize a renewal agreement, which resulted in the franchise being taken over by the Pakistan Cricket Board. This move added another layer of complexity to the league’s administrative landscape, but the PCB has indicated that it is confident in managing the situation while maintaining the team’s competitive standards.

The successful completion of the expansion auction reflects the PSL’s growing stature as a commercially viable and globally recognized cricket league. The high bidding figures not only surpassed base prices but also highlighted how attractive the league has become for investors seeking long-term sports ventures.

As the countdown to the new season begins, anticipation is building among fans across the country. The inclusion of Hyderabad and Sialkot is expected to bring fresh energy, new rivalries, and a broader fan base. With eight franchises now set to compete, the Pakistan Super League is positioning itself as a stronger, more diverse tournament, ready to write the next chapter in its evolving history.
