Saudi Arabia’s saffron industry has recently marked a significant milestone by achieving international recognition for quality, reflecting the country’s growing strength in high-value agricultural production. After undergoing rigorous testing in accredited international laboratories, Saudi-produced saffron has successfully met the requirements of the ISO 3632 standard and has been classified as “first-class.”
This achievement highlights not only the superior quality of the product but also the Kingdom’s broader ambition to position itself as a competitive player in global agricultural markets.
This progress did not emerge in isolation but is the result of a well-structured and collaborative initiative that integrates scientific research, field application, and farmer engagement.
The project is being implemented through a partnership involving the National Center for Sustainable Agriculture Research and Development (Estidamah), the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, and King Saud University. Together, these institutions have worked to strengthen applied research while ensuring that its outcomes are translated into practical farming improvements.
A key component of this initiative has been the extensive field research conducted across different regions of Saudi Arabia. Trials were carried out in ten مناطق with varying climatic and soil conditions to determine the most suitable environments for saffron cultivation.
Researchers focused on identifying optimal cultivation techniques, selecting high-quality saffron varieties, and adapting agricultural practices to local environmental conditions. This evidence-based approach has played a crucial role in achieving both productivity and quality benchmarks.
Beyond research, the initiative has actively supported farmers by expanding cultivation at the grassroots level. More than 500,000 saffron bulbs were distributed among over 43 farmers, enabling them to participate directly in this emerging sector.
Additionally, the practical findings of the research were implemented across more than 40 farms, covering a total area exceeding 364,000 square meters. These efforts have significantly contributed to increasing domestic production capacity while maintaining high standards of quality.
An important strength of the project lies in its comprehensive value chain approach. Rather than focusing solely on cultivation, it addresses every stage of production—from planting and crop management to harvesting and post-harvest processing.
Farmers receive specialized training in modern agricultural techniques, including irrigation management, disease prevention, and soil optimization. Furthermore, careful attention is given to the delicate processes of flower picking, stigma separation, drying, and storage. These steps are essential to preserving saffron’s defining characteristics, such as its color, aroma, and flavor.
Laboratory analyses conducted internationally have confirmed that Saudi saffron meets all critical quality parameters outlined by ISO 3632. This validation enhances confidence in locally produced saffron and strengthens its position in competitive global markets. It also signals that Saudi Arabia is capable of producing premium-grade agricultural goods that can rival established producers worldwide.
