Vision 2030 in Action: Madinah Emerges as a Global Tourism Landmark

In an atmosphere of celebration and forward-looking ambition, the Governor of Madinah Region and Chairman of the Al Madinah Region Development Authority, Prince Salman bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz, inaugurated a landmark initiative known as the Tourism Identity of Madinah.

The unveiling was purposefully timed during the Kingdom’s 95th National Day, highlighting both a spirit of national pride and the deep commitment to strengthening the city’s global stature.

This newly launched identity is not limited to a visual or symbolic representation; it embodies a comprehensive vision that seeks to transform how Madinah is experienced, both by its residents and by the millions who journey there each year as pilgrims and visitors. It is a project rooted in authenticity and shaped with modern sensibilities, offering a fresh narrative that merges heritage with future aspirations.

Central to this identity is a collection of cultural and natural motifs unique to Madinah. These include the distinguished Madinah typeface, the striking volcanic plateaus known locally as harrat, the durability of basalt stone, the life-giving presence of palm trees, and the aesthetic elegance of traditional architectural forms.

Together, these features provide a unified visual language that conveys continuity, history, and progress. More than design elements, they represent the city’s memory, character, and resilience, while also projecting an inviting global image.

Prince Salman emphasized that this initiative is in harmony with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030.

The plan is to enrich the lives of the city’s inhabitants, elevate the experiences of visitors and pilgrims, and position Madinah as one of the foremost cultural and spiritual destinations worldwide. By weaving its spiritual identity with a global tourism narrative, the city aims to deepen emotional ties between people and place, creating a stronger sense of belonging for residents and a more profound sense of connection for guests.

Fahad Albulihshi, Mayor of Madinah and CEO of the Al Madinah Region Development Authority, explained that the governor’s directives focus on accelerating tourism development while safeguarding the city’s unique cultural essence. He stressed that the decision to launch the identity during National Day festivities was symbolic, underscoring the importance of involving local communities in shaping a future that belongs to them as much as it does to visitors from abroad.

The new identity, he noted, is a reflection of Madinah’s architectural diversity and historical richness, while at the same time opening fresh opportunities for investors and innovators who can contribute to its tourism sector.

Recent years have seen Madinah undergo significant infrastructure and service development, and this initiative builds on that momentum. Walkways, landscaped areas, pedestrian routes to historic mosques, improved transport facilities, and community spaces are being integrated into the city’s fabric to improve quality of life.

The hospitality sector, too, has witnessed a dramatic increase in the number of hotels and guest rooms to meet growing demand from both pilgrims and leisure travelers. These developments ensure that the new identity is not just symbolic, but supported by tangible progress on the ground.

At the same time, Madinah is aligning itself with broader national strategies of diversification and economic growth. Vision 2030 places great emphasis on heritage-based tourism, cultural initiatives, and sustainable urban development, and Madinah’s tourism identity plays directly into these goals.

One of the most ambitious projects complementing this vision is the Rua Al Madinah development, which seeks to transform the areas surrounding the Prophet’s Mosque into a modern, world-class urban space capable of hosting tens of millions of visitors annually. The new identity complements such physical transformations, ensuring that branding and infrastructure evolve hand in hand.

This initiative also arrives as Madinah is recording increasing numbers of visitors and higher performance indicators in tourism, hospitality, and service industries. The city’s role is no longer viewed only through the lens of religious pilgrimage; it is now being framed as a cultural, historical, and investment hub with global recognition.

Nevertheless, this transformation brings its own set of challenges. Authorities must balance modernization with preservation, ensuring that the expansion of facilities does not undermine the city’s unique spiritual and cultural character.

Questions of environmental sustainability, traffic management, and maintaining authenticity in the face of commercialization are all being carefully considered. According to officials, cooperation between public institutions, private investors, and community stakeholders will be crucial in navigating these challenges and turning them into strengths.

What makes this initiative particularly significant is its multi-layered nature. It is not simply a new branding campaign or a symbolic exercise; it is a statement of intent about how Madinah wishes to define itself for future generations.

It speaks to the blending of identity and progress, faith and modernity, heritage and innovation. It is meant to enrich the lived experiences of those who call Madinah home, while also ensuring that every visitor carries away not just memories of devotion, but impressions of a city that is alive, dynamic, and welcoming to the world.

By launching this new tourism identity, the leadership of Madinah has sent a clear message: the city is determined to protect its sacred traditions while stepping confidently into a future where it will be recognized not just as a place of worship, but also as a symbol of cultural pride, urban development, and human connection. It is a vision that bridges past and future—rooted in the stones, palms, and scripts of history, yet open to the opportunities and possibilities of tomorrow.
