Saudi Arabia has revealed full details of its upcoming five-star luxury train project, known as “Dream of the Desert,” marking a bold new chapter in tourism and transport. According to the minister of transport and logistics services, Engineer Saleh Al-Jasser, the initiative is expected to bring a revolutionary transformation to the Kingdom’s transport network. The project is slated to commence operations by the end of 2026, with bookings opening by the end of this year.
Rather than simply offering another means of travel, the train is designed as a moving luxury hotel built on rails across the desert: each journey promises an immersive experience where design, culture and scenery merge. The composition and décor of the train reflect Saudi heritage intertwined with global hospitality standards, creating a completely new travel narrative inside the Kingdom.
The train will feature a limited number of high-end suites (reports indicate 34 suites across 14 carriages) built for exclusivity and comfort. Interiors draw on earth-toned palettes, wood panelling, bespoke textiles and motifs inspired by traditional architecture and the desert landscape, offering travellers a setting that is both elegant and rooted in place. The public spaces — lounges, dining cars, observation windows — are similarly designed with cultural references and high craftsmanship in mind.
The route for the train is being planned to run across existing railway infrastructure, making use of the northern network that links key regions of the Kingdom. Departing from Riyadh, the train will pass through locations such as Al Qassim, Hail, Al Jouf and reach Al Qurayyat near the Jordanian border. This enables it to traverse a rich cross-section of landscapes and heritage sites — not just desert vistas but also historical cities and cultural landmarks.
Beyond the physical train and its journey, the initiative ties directly to the Kingdom’s broader economic and tourism ambitions. The project aligns with Vision 2030, under which Saudi Arabia seeks to diversify its economy, enhance its global tourism appeal and build world-class infrastructure. It signals a deliberate push to attract higher-end visitors, provide new high-margin experiences and showcase the nation’s culture in an immersive form.
In terms of collaboration and design, a partnership between the national rail operator and a leading Italian hospitality firm is central to the project. The Italian brand brings experience in luxury train travel and hospitality design, while the Saudi side provides the infrastructure, regulatory framework and the cultural narrative. The design lead for interiors draws on global luxury train and hotel traditions, while explicitly pulling in Saudi cultural identity, desert references, and regional craftsmanship. The result is proposed to be more than transport: it is a luxury travel product, a cultural journey, and a tourism statement.
Bookings, though still in the early stage, are expected to open soon — the minister has indicated the end of the current year as the target for launching reservations, ahead of full operations next year (or late 2026). This sequence underscores the ambition to open the product to the market quickly, even while infrastructure and service preparations continue. Meanwhile, promotional efforts and global attention are already engaged, as travel-media and luxury-tourism observers have begun profiling the project.
In essence, this luxury train project introduces a new symbol of travel in Saudi Arabia — one that connects remote regions, highlights rich heritage, encourages slower, more experiential journeys, and positions the Kingdom on the map of ultra-premium tourism experiences. It is not simply a transport line, but a branded travel experience built around exclusivity, cultural immersion and design excellence.
As the Kingdom prepares to welcome more international visitors, diversify into high-value tourism and unlock previously under-visited landscapes, the “Dream of the Desert” project stands out as one of the flagships in that strategy. Its success would reinforce the notion that Saudi Arabia is capable of delivering travel products that rival anything offered globally — and that its desert heartland can become the setting for world-class luxury.
