ISLAMABAD/RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s first-ever Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, has sent a strong and unequivocal message to the Taliban in Kabul, stating that they must choose between supporting the mischief-makers (Khawarij) or aligning with Pakistan. In a statement issued by ISPR, he emphasized that while Pakistan remains a peaceful nation, no one will be allowed to test its territorial integrity or sovereignty.
Let everyone know that the idea of Pakistan is invincible, and its protection is ensured by the firm resolve of faithful, brave soldiers and a united nation, Field Marshal Munir asserted, highlighting the nation’s unwavering commitment to its sovereignty. He further described the armed forces as a culturally futuristic, combat-ready military machine that deters aggression and enjoys the full confidence of the nation.
Earlier today, Field Marshal Munir was presented with a guard of honour at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, in recognition of his historic elevation to the position of CDF. Contingents from all three armed forces Army, Navy, and Air Force participated in the ceremony. Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Chief of Air Staff Zaheer Ahmad Babar were also present.
The appointment of Field Marshal Munir as the country’s first CDF follows the most significant military restructuring since the 1970s, brought about under the 27th Amendment to the Constitution. The new arrangement consolidates operational, administrative, and strategic authority in a single office, abolishing the post of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) and transferring tri-service coordination to the CDF.
To implement these changes legally, the government amended the Pakistan Army Act (PAA) of 1952, defining the tenure, terms, and conditions of the COAS concurrently serving as the CDF. This allows the president, on the advice of the prime minister, to reappoint or extend the tenure of the COAS-plus-CDF for up to five years, providing the legal framework for Field Marshal Munir to remain in office potentially until December 2035.
Field Marshal Munir, who assumed command of the Pakistan Army on 29 November 2022 as the 17th Army Chief, now holds unparalleled authority over Pakistan’s military operations, reinforcing the country’s defence readiness and strategic command structure.
