Zakat Collection to Begin: All Eligible Accounts to Be Charged from 1st Ramadan

The Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection has announced the Zakat Nisab for the current year. According to the official statement, on the first day of Ramadan, Zakat will be deducted from all savings accounts as well as profit-and-loss sharing accounts in financial institutions across the country.

The Federal Administrator of Zakat has set this year’s Zakat Nisab at PKR 503,529. The announcement clearly states that if the balance in any account on the first of Ramadan falls below this threshold, no Zakat will be levied on that account.

The ministry further clarified that all funds collected as Zakat will be deposited into the Central Zakat Account maintained at the State Bank of Pakistan. This centralization ensures transparency and allows for timely disbursement of Zakat to eligible recipients, thereby maximizing its social impact.

To facilitate this process, all banks and financial institutions will remain closed to the public on the first day of Ramadan. This temporary closure is aimed at enabling financial institutions to efficiently carry out Zakat deductions without disruptions to regular banking operations.

Financial institutions have been instructed to review account balances in advance to ensure proper identification of accounts eligible for Zakat deduction. The ministry emphasized that only accounts meeting the prescribed Nisab will be subject to deduction, and strict oversight will prevent errors or omissions in the process.

Experts in Islamic finance note that the Nisab is calculated annually based on prevailing economic conditions, inflation rates, and the average balances held in financial institutions. This approach ensures that Zakat remains equitable, reaching those truly eligible, and reflecting the ethical and social obligations prescribed in Islamic law.

The ministry also urged account holders to verify their balances and provide any required information to their banks prior to the first of Ramadan. This proactive approach aims to prevent delays or complications in the Zakat deduction process and ensures that funds reach the deserving recipients on time.

Additionally, the statement highlighted the commitment of the ministry to make the Zakat collection and distribution process fully transparent and accountable. By centralizing funds and monitoring the entire process, authorities aim to enhance public trust and increase participation in Zakat contributions.

The official declaration emphasized that the Zakat deduction process is not just a financial transaction but a key instrument for promoting social welfare during the holy month of Ramadan. Proper implementation ensures that the spirit of Zakat — supporting those in need and fostering social solidarity — is fully realized across the country.

Citizens were advised to cooperate with banks during this period and ensure that account information is up to date, facilitating accurate deductions. The ministry further confirmed that any discrepancies or complaints will be promptly addressed to maintain fairness and public confidence.

This year’s announcement reinforces the importance of structured Zakat management, central oversight, and accountability. By adhering to these measures, the government aims to ensure that charitable obligations are fulfilled efficiently, while also supporting the broader socio-economic welfare objectives of the nation during the sacred month of Ramadan.
