PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday called for Pakistan and Malaysia to join hands in developing mutually beneficial projects and expanding cooperation in trade, technology, and investment, marking what both leaders described as a new chapter in their longstanding partnership.
Addressing a joint press conference alongside his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, after bilateral talks in Putrajaya, PM Shehbaz said his visit aimed to transform Pakistan-Malaysia relations into a strategic and forward-looking alliance.
This is my first visit to your great country, but it feels like a family reunion, the premier said, expressing gratitude for the exceptionally warm welcome extended to him and his delegation. Pakistan wants to work hand-in-hand with Malaysia to develop joint ventures and mutually beneficial projects where expertise from both countries can come together.
The Pakistani leader praised Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership, describing Malaysia as a model of economic progress and visionary governance.
We had very productive discussions on a wide range of issues, including trade, technology, investment, and international cooperation, PM Shehbaz said. Our views converge on almost all key matters of mutual interest.
He highlighted Pakistan’s interest in learning from Malaysia’s advancements in artificial intelligence, technology, and innovation, saying these areas could serve as engines of growth for both nations.
During the talks, PM Shehbaz welcomed Malaysia’s interest in importing $200 million worth of Pakistani halal meat, assuring that the export process would strictly adhere to international halal and food safety standards.
We will ensure every requirement of Malaysia’s food and customs authorities is met, he said. This will not only achieve the $200 million target but also expand significantly in the future.
The premier noted that around 150,000 Pakistanis currently live and work in Malaysia, contributing positively to its economy and society.
PM Shehbaz also announced the Urdu translation of Anwar Ibrahim’s book Script, which outlines the Malaysian leader’s vision of sustainability, innovation, and research.
These are the great values that define his leadership and this book will resonate across borders for generations, he said.
He emphasized the importance of hard work, commitment, and innovation in nation-building, noting that Pakistan’s youth have the potential to drive the country’s transformation if equipped with modern technology and education.
In his remarks, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed deep appreciation for Pakistan’s “clear and courageous stance” on the Palestinian cause.
“We are extremely appreciative of Pakistan’s unwavering position on Gaza,” he said, adding that both nations shared a desire for lasting peace in the Middle East.
He also confirmed that Malaysia had increased rice imports from Pakistan and would further explore meat imports following PM Shehbaz’s proposal joking that the Pakistani premier had politely suggested the deal but also insisted firmly.
Anwar described PM Shehbaz as a brother and praised Pakistan’s early achievements in science, technology, and education, expressing readiness to expand cooperation in STEM fields and digital innovation.
Earlier, PM Shehbaz received a guard of honour at the Perdana Putra Complex, home to the Malaysian prime minister’s office.
In a post on X, PM Anwar said that the visit enhances Malaysia-Pakistan friendship and opens a new chapter of strategic cooperation for our peoples.
PM Shehbaz is accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office, both sides are expected to sign several agreements and MoUs covering trade, IT, telecommunications, halal industry, education, energy, digital economy, and infrastructure.The visit reflects the enduring partnership between Pakistan and Malaysia, rooted in mutual respect, shared interests, and a common vision for progress, the FO said.
