In a major success at sea, the Pakistan Navy recently intercepted two vessels in the Arabian Sea, seizing narcotics valued at more than 972 million US dollars. The operation was carried out by the Pakistan Navy ship PNS Yarmook and was conducted in coordination with the international maritime coalition, Combined Maritime Forces (CMF).
According to official sources, the naval crew managed to carry out two separate interdictions within a span of just 48 hours, highlighting the efficiency and operational readiness of the Pakistani naval forces. The mission, named Operation Al-Masmak, commenced on October 16 under the leadership of the Saudi-led Combined Task Force 150, which oversees coordinated maritime security operations in some of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
The first interdiction took place on October 18, when PNS Yarmook’s personnel intercepted a suspicious vessel and recovered more than two tons of crystal methamphetamine, with an estimated market value of around 822 million dollars. Less than two days later, the naval team successfully conducted a second operation on another unmarked ship, uncovering 350 kilograms of crystal meth worth approximately 140 million dollars and 50 kilograms of cocaine valued at around 10 million dollars.
Both vessels were without national flags or registration markings, leaving their origins and ownership unclear. All seized narcotics were carefully transported to the naval ship for verification and analysis before being safely destroyed to prevent them from re-entering illicit trafficking networks.
The operation was led by Commodore Fahad Al-Juwaid of the Royal Saudi Navy, who described it as one of the most successful anti-narcotics missions in the history of the Combined Maritime Forces. He emphasized that the achievement demonstrates the critical importance of international cooperation in combating transnational drug trafficking and maintaining maritime security. The United States Central Command also praised the operation on its official social media account, extending congratulations to the Pakistan Navy and all allied forces involved.
The Combined Maritime Forces is a coalition of 47 countries whose naval units monitor over 3 million square miles of international waters, including the world’s most crucial commercial shipping routes, to prevent the smuggling of drugs, arms, and other illegal materials. The successful interdiction by PNS Yarmook not only highlights Pakistan Navy’s operational capabilities but also reinforces its reputation as a key contributor to regional and international maritime security.
PNS Yarmook is among the most advanced ships in the Pakistan Navy. Commissioned in Romania in February 2020 and formally inducted into the fleet in December 2020, the vessel is equipped for electronic warfare, anti-ship, and anti-air operations. Its sophisticated self-defense and terminal protection systems allow it to undertake multiple naval operations simultaneously, including unmanned aerial missions, showcasing its versatility and modern combat readiness.
The ship has previously participated in humanitarian missions, including a notable rescue in March 2024 when it assisted eight Iranian fishermen on a burning vessel in the Arabian Sea. In July 2024, PNS Yarmook was deployed in the Indian Ocean alongside an onboard helicopter to ensure the safety and security of commercial vessels transiting to and from Pakistani ports.
